The project challenge was to evolve the previous award winning Altoids website into a new rich-media Flash driven site addressing the uniqueness of the brand and the curiously strong appetites of the Altoids audience. The new site is a fresh, unpretentious and fun destination that “immerses visitors in the process of creative discovery”.

The Red Sky team developed three unique modules, which inspire visitors to peer inside an actual work-in-progress created by artists of different disciplines, to enjoy humorous commentary provided by pop culture critics and to participate in an online art collaboration with friends.

As the Senior Interaction Designer, having joined the project in process, I developed the overall site architecture and connected the three sections of the site through the homepage preview and expanding global navigation. I addressed the remaining interaction design issues and assisted in designing the first time user experience flow and help features.

The American Century art exhibit was an unprecedented assembly of American art of the 20th Century. The exhibit was held at the Whitney Museum in New York during the summer of 1999. Intel commissioned a rich-media website to complement the exhibit.

The objective was to create a rich-media broadband website that pushed web technology at the time. The website showcased a significant sampling of the exhibit, experienced primarily through the Exhibit section, as seen to the right. The website expanded on the background of the artist, significance of the art and historical context when the art was made. The overall goal was to enable visitors to better identify with the art and provide an innovative digital "museum going" experience.

The site made use of extensive DHTML, streaming media and other advanced web technologies. A unique component of the site is the scrolling Timeline and My List feature, as seen in the sequence of images below. The My List feature allows visitors to bookmark and annotate artworks as they move through the online exhibit and then create a personal tour, which can be saved and shared with friends.

As one of two Interaction Designers on the project, I worked on the overall concept, the Timeline section and the My List feature. In addition, I architected the content management system that managed all media assets.

The Audrey is an information appliance designed to act as the nerve center of the home, enabling the coordination of family activities, communication between family members, and quick access to online content like weather, traffic, sports, stocks and pre-packaged content channels.3Com looked to Razorfish to develop a high quality user interface that would differentiate the Audrey user experience from the emerging information appliance competitive landscape. The Audrey user interface is simple, easy to use and intuitive. The key features comprised of a calendar, email, address book and web browser. Audrey's personality is a combination of a trusted friend and concierge.

As the Interaction Designer on this project, I outlined the personality of the interface and led the interaction design development. I defined the user experience direction, assessed the technical constraints presented by the hardware and limited OS as well as worked with the visual design and development team to deliver the solution. I also played a coordination role in our collaboration with IDEO who developed the industrial design.

FlipShare is a media management, movie creation and social sharing application that comes pre-loaded on the FlipVideo line of cameras. FlipShare makes it easy to transfer videos off the camera, organize and edit videos, create custom movies and personalized video greeting cards and seamlessly share their videos with friends and family.

FlipVideo has sold more than 7 million cameras since it’s inception in 2007. It created a new “shoot and share” video camera category that changed the video camera industry. Much of Flip’s appeal rested in how simple it is to capture and share videos. You turn it on, and it’s ready to shoot immediately. The driving vision has been to make video fun and accessible to all. People are passionate about their Flip. Flip was acquired by Cisco in 2010.

FlipShare began as a simple media file off loader in late 2008 and quickly grew and expanded to become a full featured desktop software that included a web application, a comprehensive cloud services platform supporting iPhone and Android smart phones, iPad tablet and a FlipConnect TV product. Over 24 months we completed countless releases, following a Agile development process, made a major shift from a memory making emphasis to a real-time communications emphasis based on constant feedback from customers. We expanded the capabilities around simple editing and creation tools to allow customers to express themselves and create high quality videos. And lastly we invested in developing robust sharing capabilities that tied into sending via email, posting to group channels and uploading to social networks such as Facebook and YouTube.

As the head of User Experience, I worked on all features, setting the direction, guiding the requirements definition, directing the design development and overseeing the delivery of each release. This was a strategic leadership and management role working closely with senior management and cross functional stakeholders, building the design team while guiding product and design efforts to deliver an integrated and simple user experience.

The FlipShare redesign was in response to the growing desire to both enhance the FlipShare look and feel as well as unify more closely with the overall Cisco Consumer Products brand direction and marketing site.

This was a quick turn around project that took less than a month. The scope of the project was to simply refresh the desktop and web user experience. The design explorations were part of a broader effort to establish a unified Flip design language across desktop, web, mobile, tablet and TV platforms for all Cisco Consumer Products.

As the head of User Experience, I initiated the project, sold the need to senior management, coordinated with brand stakeholders and directed multiple design directions with individual designers. As part of that effort I also took the opportunity to develop one of the directions. I authored the above designs.

FlipShare mobile consists of an iPhone, iPad and Android application that offer instant access to your Flip videos.

In late 2010 the objective was to develop a robust FlipShare mobile offering alongside the desktop and web offering. Within a period of 4 months we developed an iPhone solution that focused on three major areas; playback of shared videos, access to local videos shot from the device along with sharing and commenting capabilities. We then leveraged the iPhone solution in develop Android and iPad solutions. It was a solid starting point for many of the subsequent mobile connected experiences we have explored.

As the head of User Experience, my responsibilities were to direct all aspects of the design development. I led a team of three designers as part of a rapid design, prototyping and Agile development process.

FlipShare MovieMaker project brings the simple Flip video editing and movie creation capabilities to the iPad.

Flip was interested to develop a complimentary offering to the desktop on the iPad with a focus on enhancing the immediacy of creation and sharing capabilities. As part of an evolving mobile strategy, we explored multiple concepts. We choose to start with the MovieMaker concept and took 3 months to develop a prototype. The thinking both pushed the next-gen product roadmap as well as established a new forward looking direction for the design language.

As the head of User Experience, I outlined the project, led the product concepting and directed the design and prototyping efforts, working in close collaboration with an external design partner.

Mira is Microsoft’s consumer facing eHome wireless smart display solution. The Mira user interface is comprised of a full-screen dashboard that facilitates managing profile selection, host PC connectivity and external media playback. The Mira user interface compliments the Windows XP user interface, allowing users to feel as though they are seamlessly using their desktop computer while interacting with the smart display.

Microsoft looked to Agency.com to develop the overall visual language and button iconography for the Mira user interface. We had to work within a limited Windows CE environment, a pre-defined architecture and a tight project timeline. We developed three interface concepts; "flat monitor", "utility PDA" and "metallic PC", resulting in a highly refined final design seen to the right.

As the Senior Interaction Designer on this project, my responsibilities were to guide the interface concept exploration, translate the technical architecture constraints and lead the interaction design development of the dashboard and setup wizard.

The MyYahoo! Broadband Portal is Yahoo!’s premium portal for Broadband Access customers. The portal leverages the MyYahoo! platform to deliver customization capabilities with added rich media modules, advanced functionality and premium content.

The site follows an evolutionary process building innovative new features on top of the MyYahoo! platform optimized to meet specific engagement and performance objectives. During the v2.0 to v3.0 upgrade my team addressed the redesign of the portal header to incorporate the Yahoo! Vertical Search feature, Yahoo! property shortcut links and customer care services. We refined the overall portal framework and partner co-branding capabilities. Within the portal we added dynamic Flash functionality to the Today and Quick Picks modules, which are shown to the right. More specifically, in the case of the Today module, we incorporated inline video functionality and the ability to paginate through multiple collections of articles, which dramatically increased content consumption on the portal.

As the Senior Design Manager, Mark's responsibilities were to oversee the various enhancements. I initiated the concepting, set the strategic direction and oversaw the interaction and visual design development. I was also responsible for coordinating my team’s efforts with the MyYahoo! team to ensure consistency and platform compatibility.

The Yahoo! Broadband Video Player is a Flash rich internet application (RIA) developed to deliver high quality streaming video for the Broadband Access customers. The16s to increase engagement and video consumption as well as achieve a universal video player platform for the Yahoo! network, consolidating seven different players.

This was a large scale cross BU initiative having to address a significant number of stakeholder needs, challenging requirements and yet achieve a simple and intuitive user experience. The design team conducted formative user research as well as iterative prototype testing to refine the design and feature set. We discovered the user behavior of a primary “view mode” vs a secondary “browse mode”. We incorporated current advertising units and video search functionality. We developed an innovative and scalable multi-channel navigation system, allowing for quick content pagination and easy access to the complete Yahoo! video collection.

As the design director, Mark led all aspects of the user experience design in particular outlining the user-centered design process, helping define the product requirements, overseeing the user research and testing, developing the user experience strategy, directing the interaction and visual design, overseeing the implementation and fostering consensus across the various BU senior stakeholders.
